Study Overview
Participants: For this research study, we are seeking both individuals who are experiencing symptoms of clinical risk and individuals who are not experiencing symptoms or signs of clinical risk.
Purpose: In this study we want to understand how experiences with unusual thoughts may impact the way individuals complete different tasks and process information. Specifically, we are interested in how thought experiences are related to individual performance on computerized tasks, motor functioning, responding to rewards, filtering out information from the environment, voice control, and non-verbal behaviors. Our goal is to gain understanding on how performance and functioning may be impacted by symptoms of clinical risk and to lay groundwork for developing new ways to improve symptoms and functioning. Results of this study may help us provide ways to help individuals with worrisome thoughts, emotions, and experiences and may help in developing a way to prevent these experiences from worsening.
Activities: Participants of this study are asked to complete computerized tasks, interviews, and online questionnaires. We expect that participation will last up to 2 years. The primary risk of participation is general discomfort from the tasks. The primary benefits of participation are gaining helpful knowledge about the factors that influence risk of developing psychosis or other serious mental illness and potentially receiving a referral for community treatment resources. Participants are compensated $30 per hour of participation in this study, paid by virtual gift card or check. Study payments are considered taxable income and reportable to the IRS.
Additional Information: This research study does not include treatment. Also, we will not be able to provide study participants with specific diagnostic information because the design of our study is from a research perspective. The information we do obtain may be helpful for evaluating individuals in the future. For study participants seeking treatment or diagnostic information, we can offer recommendations, referrals, and resources based on the information we obtain regarding your thoughts and experiences. For study participants who already have a treatment provider, we can provide a summary report that you may share with your provider.
